The qalam is a type of pen made from a cut and dried reed used for Islamic calligraphy. Thus the qalam is revered as a symbol of wisdom and education. The 68th chapter of the Quran is called Al-Qalam which means "The Pen", where in the first verse God swears by the qalam.
